You don’t DESERVE to rest.

You NEED to rest.

The events of this past year have caused us to look at every aspect of our day-to-day life through a different lens. The way that we view rest has got to be a part of the conversation.

This culture of equating exhaustion with production needs to be a thing of the past. There is far too much research into the negative effects of fatigue for anyone to continue to view it as a badge of honor.

Burnout should not be the norm in any career field.

Sleep deprivation is used as a form of torture. Any environment that normalizes a form of torture is toxic.

Read that again.

You’re not “killing it” when you don’t get enough rest. You’re actually killing yourself.

There is literally no upside to sleep deprivation. It affects cognition, it weakens your immune system, (If there is anything that we have learned this year, it’s the importance of keeping our immune system in tip-top shape!!). It increases your risk for things like heart disease and hypertension.

It causes you to make poor choices regarding food and drink (When you’re tired, your diet consists of sugar-laden carbs, caffeine, then more carbs and caffeine.) It increases anxiety and depression. It causes irritability.

Studies show that fatigue has the same effect as being intoxicated, meaning if you’re sleep-deprived and get behind the wheel, you are now not just a danger to yourself, but you’re putting others at risk as well.

And these are just the “greatest hits.”

A work culture that sees rest as a privilege needs to be examined. The mindset that sees rest as luxury needs to be turned on its head. Our general ideology that doing anything until you are at the point of exhaustion needs to be changed. You contribute nothing when you are deprived of rest.

Rest is vital.

Rest is necessary.


Fight for it.
